CHS-Based Piggly Wiggly Owner Attempting to Dissolve and Liquidate Stores

Greenbax Enterprises, the local parent of Piggly Wiggly Carolina Co. is seeking approval from shareholders to liquidate and dissolve the company and exit the wholesale and retail grocery business by year-end 2014.  After 67 years, the company is reportedly trying to sell its wholesale business to New Hampshire-based C&S Wholesale Grocers Inc and sell its 19 remaining grocery stores to independent operators.  Pigg sold 29 of its Lowcountry stores in 2012-2013 and most of its Charleston area locations to either Bi-Lo or Harris Teeter.  Abigail Darlington of The Post and Courier has the story, the update and a little history on a local institution.
