Daimler AG will build Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans in N CHS, creating some 1,360 new jobs. They will join the 140 employees at Palmetto Commerce Park off I-26 and University Blvd.. The 200-acre Sprinter factory will have an assembly line, a paint shop and a new body shop and is the “key to our future growth in the very dynamic North American van market” according to the head of Mercedes-Benz Vans. Construction will begin in 2017 and the first vans will roll off the assembly line by the end of the decade. Today, the vans are sold in North America but made in Germany, partially disassembled and then shipped to N CHS for reassembly, all to avoid import tariffs. Reportedly, CHS and SC competed against two other states to get the plant, and the state’s willingness to train workers was the key – plus some economic incentives. Warren Wise, David Wren and John McDermott have the story for the Post and Courier.
